Extension or Color aftercare: 7 rules for the first 72 hours
By All About-Extensions&LocsLLC | October 3, 2026
Serving Cape Coral, Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Lehigh Acres, and Matlacha
The #1 rule for the first 72 hours is simple: keep your hair dry and low-stress, meaning no washing, no swimming, and no sweaty workouts when you can avoid it. We see the biggest “why did my color fade?” and “why do my extensions feel grabby?” problems in Cape-coral when heat, humidity, and saltwater hit too soon.
At All About-Extensions&LocsLLC in Southeast Cape Coral near the Del Prado and Cape Coral Parkway commercial corridor, we do Extension or Color appointments starting at $50 with a non-refundable deposit that goes toward your service, then $150 an hour. If you searched “hair salon near me” or “hair color near me” and landed here, this aftercare guide is the fastest way to protect what you just invested in.
Rule #1-3 (first 24 to 48 hours): don’t wash, don’t soak, don’t tighten
If you do nothing else, protect the first two days. Color is still settling, and extension attachment points need time to “set” without extra moisture, friction, or oil. In our Cape Coral humidity, hair can swell and frizz fast, which makes fresh color look dull and makes extensions want to tangle sooner.
Quick checklist: Skip shampoo, skip pools and the Gulf, keep styles loose, and keep your hands out of your bonds.
Keep it dry on purpose
We generally recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before your first wash after Extension or Color. That includes “just rinsing.” Water plus rubbing is the issue. If you need a refresh, use a light blow-dry at the roots and a clean brush to re-shape.
Avoid tight styles and hard brushing
Tight ponytails, slick buns, and aggressive edge control can put stress exactly where we don’t want it. Keep your hair down or in a low, loose style. When you brush, start at the ends and work up slowly. If you have tape-in extensions, microbead extensions, or another bonded method, go around the attachment points instead of dragging through them.
No pool, no ocean, no “quick dip”
Chlorine, salt, sunscreen residue, and boat-day wind are a rough combo in the first 48 to 72 hours. If you live the Cape Coral lifestyle, we get it. Just give your color and attachments a few days before you’re back in the water.
Rule #4-5 (days 3 to 7): sweat and sun fade color and tangle hair extensions
Once you’re past the first 72 hours, you can start living normally again, but week one still matters. In hot summers and humid Septembers here in Cape-coral, sweat and UV tend to show up as faster fade, extra dryness, and that “snaggy” feeling when you brush.
Workouts: ease back in
We generally recommend avoiding heavy sweating for at least 48 to 72 hours, then keeping workouts lighter when possible for the first week. If you’re sweating a lot, keep hair off your neck in a loose braid, then let it fully dry before you brush or wrap it for sleep.
Sun and boating: protect the investment
UV exposure is one of the quickest ways to change tone, especially if you just did highlights, balayage, or color correction. A hat is still the simplest fix. And if you’re out on the water, remember that wind tangles extensions fast. A loose braid beats leaving hair fully down in the breeze.
Cape Coral reality: Pool time and boating are part of life here. Give us a heads-up if you’ve got a water-heavy week coming up, and we’ll help you plan a wash schedule and style that protects your bonds.
Rule #6: wash and condition like you’re protecting bonds, not fighting your hair
After your first wash window opens, your products matter. Stick with color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and an extension-friendly conditioner. The goal is clean hair without stripping color or leaving heavy residue that can cause slipping or buildup.
A simple routine we like for extensions + color
- Shampoo mainly at the scalp. Let the suds rinse through the lengths, don’t scrub the mids and ends.
- Condition mids to ends only. Keep conditioner and masks off attachment points.
- Avoid oil-based products at bond sites. Oils plus friction are a common reason extensions start acting up.
- Use heat protection before hot tools, especially after highlights, balayage, or reds that fade faster in sun.
If you’re wearing fusion and braids, or you’ve got locs plus color, the same idea applies: keep product heavy stuff away from areas that need grip and structure, and focus moisture where the hair actually feels dry.
Rule #7: sleep and detangle like you want your blend to stay perfect
Nighttime is where matting usually starts. If you wake up with a knot at the nape, it’s rarely “bad hair.” It’s friction plus moisture plus moving around on cotton.
How to sleep with extensions
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or wrap your hair with a satin scarf. Before bed, gently detangle and put hair into one or two loose braids. Keep it loose. Tight braids can pull at the root area and make attachments feel sore.
Daily detangling that doesn’t cause shedding
Detangle when hair is dry or lightly damp, not dripping wet. Hold the hair near the root with one hand so you’re not tugging on attachment points, then brush the ends first. If you hit a snag, slow down. For extensions, speed is the enemy.
When to reach out in Cape Coral (and how we handle quick check-ins)
A little tightness or “new hair awareness” right after extensions is common. Mild frizz or tone shift can also happen fast here with sun and humidity. What we don’t want is you trying to fix it with a DIY trim, harsh purple shampoo, or oiling the roots.
Reach out to us if you notice: extension slippage, irritation that doesn’t calm down, tangling that won’t brush out, or color that looks uneven once you’re in natural daylight.
I’ve been going to Sam for four years and it’s NEVER been a miss. The quality always exceeds my expectations and has kept me coming back every time.
